UFUQ meetings with new government and Minister – Update

Since the election of the new Crisafulli LNP state government, your union has held two very positive meetings with minister Leahy and her team, with more planned.

I am encouraged by the open communication by the Minister and her staff, and I thank her and her team for the encouraging way they’ve engaged with us. There is much to discuss in our portfolio and the focus on better operations is one key factor we can agree on. No doubt we will have future discussions on what works, what doesn’t and what can be improved.

2025 Australia Day Public Holiday

This year, the Australia Day will occur on Sunday 26 January. Public Holiday rates and entitlements will not be paid on this day, but instead they will apply to work done on Monday 27 January.

The reason for the difference between the date of Australia Day and the date to which additional entitlements are applied is because Public Holidays, as defined industrially, are set out in the Holidays Act 1983.

This act provides if the 26th of January is on a Saturday or Sunday, the official Australia Day Public Holiday is observed on the following Monday, meaning that the entitlements that working (or not working) on a public holiday attract are calculated on the day that is recognised as an official public holiday, and not the 26th.

For more information on the entitlements you will receive for Monday 27 January please review clause 23.1 (FFF and SO) or 23.2 (Firecom) of your Award here.  These clauses provide the conditions for both daywork and when you are on shift (shift worker or continuous shift worker) in either stream.

If you are a day worker who works a fixed roster that is not Monday to Friday and who has regular workdays that include Saturday and Sunday, please contact your Union to discuss if any other conditions might apply to your role.

Please note, for this circumstance, you must be working a fixed roster, working exactly the same days every week, and those days must include a Saturday and/or a Sunday (for example you might have a fixed roster of working every Thursday through to Monday). This excludes Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday day workers.
