SEPTEMBER 11 – 25 YEARS OF REMEMBRANCE
This Friday, 11 September, marks 25 years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
On that day, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives following coordinated attacks in the United States. Among those killed were 343 members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) who responded to the World Trade Center and gave their lives while working to save others.
Twenty-five years on, firefighters and communities around the world continue to remember those who were lost.
We also remember the many firefighters who survived that day but were exposed to hazardous and toxic substances during the response, rescue and recovery operations. In the years since, many have developed serious illnesses and many have subsequently died as a result.
The long-term health impacts identified following September 11 have contributed significantly to international research into occupational cancers and other diseases affecting firefighters. This research forms part of the broader body of evidence that has increased our understanding of the link between firefighting and occupational disease and supported stronger protections for firefighters around the world.
As firefighters, we understand the commitment that comes with answering the call and protecting others, even in the most dangerous circumstances.
This September 11, we ask all QPFU members to take a moment to remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice, those who have died from September 11-related illnesses in the years since, and all those whose lives were forever changed by that day.
10/10 NATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ REMEMBRANCE DAY
On Saturday, 10 October 2026, firefighters, families, colleagues and friends will come together to honour firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
National Firefighters’ Remembrance Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who came before us and to ensure their contribution is never forgotten.
In Queensland, we remember the firefighters who have lost their lives while serving and protecting Queensland communities since 1877.
We encourage QPFU members to take the opportunity to remember our fallen colleagues and the families, friends and crews they left behind.
